Lions Home For The Elders was initiated and established by Lions Clubs of Singapore. Founded in 1980, our first community home for the aged destitute housed 18 residents. Today we have grown and expanded our services and capabilities to include a holistic approach in aged care. We are now a voluntary welfare organisation who is also one of the first few nursing homes to be accredited as an Approved Service Provider by Ministry of Health. With a team of over 180 administrative and nursing staff, we operate two fully equipped nursing homes, one located at Bishan Street 13 (expected date of relocation from Toa Payoh Rise to be in the last quarter of 2015) and the other at Bedok South with a total of 384 beds. Memories Café is a programme for persons with dementia and their caregivers, conducted at external partner cafés and restaurants. The programme provides a normalised café setting for participants to interact through activities and conversations in a safe, supportive and conducive environment. It offers a fresh change of environment to caregivers who may have long been attending support groups held in more formal settings such as dementia day care centres, while encouraging the interaction and bonding between the person with dementia and family members. Ultimately, it provides an avenue for persons with dementia and caregivers to have respite and enjoy themselves despite dementia. The concept of Memories Café was originated from Dr Bere Miesen’s “Alzheimer’s Café” in 1997 in the Netherlands. Dr Miesen’s initiative aims to provide a normalised café setting for persons with dementia with the following objectives: To minimise the social stigma on persons living with dementia and to encourage social acceptance through the engagements in a café within a community setting. About the Montessori Philosophy Montessori for Dementia Care aims to reach out to persons with dementia using the Montessori guiding principles of: Focusing on strengths Providing activities with choice and purpose Creating templates for activities Building confidence by completing simple tasks before complex tasks Breaking down tasks into steps Measuring engagement About Montessori-based Dementia Programming® Montessori-Based Dementia Programming (MBDP) is a method of working with older adults living with cognitive and/or physical impairments based on the ideas of the educator Maria Montessori. It has been shown to increase levels of engagement and participation in activities of persons with dementia and has been shown to generally improve many aspects of the quality of life of those who have it. Montessori-Based Dementia Programming uses rehabilitation principles including guided repetition, task breakdown, and progressing from simple to complex. Additionally, principles of dementia interventions such as external cue usage and reliance on implicit memory are used. Examples of activities include reading groups and memory games. It was founded and developed by Dr. Cameron Camp at the Myers Research Institute and is the recipient of various awards and recognitions.
