The work of TRANS first took root in the 1970s in Bedok where there were concerns about social problems and youth issues. A small group of volunteers organised informal activities to engage youths at risk. This led to the Bedok Outreach Project (aka Project Khidmat Belia in Malay) in 1979. The project was entirely volunteer-driven. The volunteers, imbued with passion, worked hard to reach out to youths on the fringe. Various activities such as street camps, mass games and tuition were organised. As activities increased, a space of 45 square metres (the size of a 2-room rental flat) at the void deck of Blk 13, Bedok South was rented to serve the purpose. In 1986, professional social workers were first employed. In the following year, the team tried to register the organisation as a society under the name of ‘Temasek Centre’ but was unsuccessful. However, the application was approved when the name was changed to TRANS Centre. TRANS was the acronym for Temasek Reachout And Neighbourhood Service Centre and was lovingly called TC by the youths, staff and volunteers. TC soon expanded its space from a 2-room flat to a bigger unit at the void deck. Under TC, youths found […]

United Medicare Centre (UMC), Toa Payoh was officially opened in 2003 by the then Minister for Health, Mr Khaw Boon Wan. Initiated by the Ministry of Health (MOH) to cater to Singapore’s growing demand for quality nursing care, UMC (Toa Payoh) was established as Singapore’s first purpose-built private nursing home. The flagship 241-bed facility at Toa Payoh took 18 months to complete, with fully customised facilities to cater to the needs of its residents and their families. In the same year, UMC was also approved as a provider of the Portable Subsidy Scheme by MOH, in recognition of our work and commitment to providing the best healthcare services for our residents. Recognising the growing demand for elderly nursing care services in Singapore, UMC answered the call with the opening of its second nursing home in 2012, offering 138 beds at Elizabeth Drive, in the restful surroundings of the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. The tranquil environment was the impetus for the creation of a new wing in 2015, expanding the home’s capacity to a total of 248 beds. UMC’s latest development has seen its return to one of Singapore’s oldest neighbourhoods – Queensway. Conveniently located next to the 10-storey heritage flats […]
Unlocking ADHD was founded to bring hope to the ADHD community and to address the gap in information, support, and access that exists in Singapore. We believe that there are many struggling children/ youths in the community and stressed-out parents who have tried many avenues but are unable to unlock their children’s potential. This situation also applies to adults who have struggled through childhood, academic, professional, and personal life saddled with underperformance, shame, low self-esteem, and negative labels. If ADHD happens to be the underlying reason for their situation, the good news is that with a proper diagnosis and management, life can change for the better! ADHDers have many inherent strengths and identifying these will enable them to become productive members in society and also fulfill their potential. There is gap in the availability of information about ADHD in Singapore – where to go for help, access affordable support and connect to a community. There are also gaps in accessing tools to equip ADHDers to live a better life. Unlocking ADHD hopes to be able to do its part to fill these gaps. US psychiatrist, Dr Edward (Ned) Hallowell, a world authority on ADHD and himself an ADHDer, has described the […]
